Five years ago today, my life changed in a way I never could have predicted. This is the story of the people, lessons, and experiences that ultimately led to the launch of Human Value Exchange on September 17, 2026.
Five years ago today, my life took a turn I could no longer explain away.
By most conventional measures, I was doing well. I had spent twenty years building a career at Microsoft and had earned recognition I once dreamed about. I had a wife, two children, a home and a growing sense that I was winning the game society had handed me.
On September 17, 2021, that story fell apart.
That night, I drank a bottle of vodka, fell down a flight of stairs and split open the back of my head. My children called 911. I woke up in a hospital with eleven stitches.
Somehow, my children made it to the hospital and helped me get home after I was discharged in the middle of the night. I can still picture the look on my wife Jenna’s face when she returned early from a girls’ weekend at the cottage and found the aftermath waiting for her.
The strange thing was that none of this appeared on the scoreboard I had been using.
My title still counted. So did my income and assets. From the outside, the score still looked good.
Behind the scenes, I was struggling with alcohol and carrying years of accumulated stress. COVID had added its own uncertainty, isolation and mental strain. I had become very good at succeeding professionally while hiding how much I was struggling personally.
I had learned how to achieve. I had not learned how to master myself.
The old scoreboard measured one part of my life and treated it as the whole thing. It measured achievement without asking whether I was flourishing.
You can win the old scoreboard and still be bleeding out on the floor of your life.
That night did not instantly change me. It forced me to start looking at myself more honestly. What followed was a five-year search for freedom, although it took me some time to understand that freedom was what I was seeking.
A lesson I kept forgetting
For much of my life, I treated growth as an individual pursuit. Yet some of the earliest evidence against that belief had been sitting in front of me since university.
That was when Jenna and I built a coffee shop together called the Turning Point Café. It was truly a magical place where everyone was welcome and could be themselves. We created something through partnership that neither of us could have created alone.
I understood that then, at least for a while.
During my years at Microsoft, career and professional achievement gradually became the dominant lens through which I saw progress. My focus shifted toward what I could accomplish as an individual.
Raising Wolfgang and Willow with Jenna brought the lesson back. Family taught me that some forms of growth can only happen in a relationship.
Then COVID arrived, and I forgot again. I became more isolated and disconnected from many of the relationships that had helped ground me.
After September 2021, Jenna stayed and continued walking beside me. Her decision allowed me to understand an idea my teacher, Mama Laurie, had shared with me years earlier.
There are two paths to enlightenment: the path of initiation and the path of relationship.
I understood those words intellectually. Through my marriage and family, I began to understand them through experience.
Start with condition
Another part of my recovery came through Ryan Michler, his book Sovereignty: The Battle for the Hearts and Minds of Men, and Iron Council.
Michler’s Battle Plan is organized around four areas: Condition, Connection, Contribution and Calibration. When you do not know where to begin, start with Condition. Start with your body.
Iron Council made that practical. In weekly Battle Team meetings with Team Delta, where I served as Executive Officer, we held one another accountable for the promises we made and the actions we committed to take.
I also had an example living in my own home.
Wolfgang began lifting weights in our basement when he was around fifteen. Nobody had to push him. He kept training year after year, eventually becoming a certified fitness instructor and earning nutrition certifications.
What stayed with me was the way he cared for his body. Movement, nutrition and discipline seemed natural to him. He also chose not to drink, even when many of his friends did.
At twenty-two, Wolfgang is almost the exact opposite of who I was at twenty-two.
For years, I assumed I was the one teaching him. I can now see how much his example taught me.
My Microsoft colleague Manny gave me the accountability I needed to begin training consistently. With his help, I lost fifty pounds.
Later, Alan Warner took my training to another level. With his coaching, I joined the 1,000-pound club, measured by the combined weight of the squat, bench press and deadlift.
I also became a certified health and life coach and a certified personal fitness instructor.
Changing my body gave me evidence I badly needed. Change was possible, but it required practice, consistency and often another person willing to hold me accountable. The coaching mattered so much in my own transformation that Alan later became my partner in Human Value Exchange.
The simple lesson I ignored for ten years
Mama Laurie of the Seventh Ray Mystery School had been my teacher, on and off, for fifteen years.
In 2013, she gave me a simple instruction. She told me twice:
“It is very easy if you do the work.”
The work is to meditate and journal.
That was it.
I understood what she meant, but I did not build the practice. Instead, I spent the next ten years looking for answers while leaving her advice largely unapplied.
On January 1, 2023, I finally began meditating and journaling every day.
Over time, I learned that understanding a practice and living it are very different things. The instructions had never been complicated. I needed to become consistent enough to follow them.
I continued my studies and eventually became an official teacher and guide within the Seventh Ray Mystery School. Yet the biggest change came from finally practising what I had already been taught.
The answer had arrived ten years before I was ready to live it.
The people behind the financial path
My journey into financial wealth also began through relationships.
An Iron Council brother named Karan introduced me to Wealth Builders and its approach to financial education, self-improvement and wealth creation. Those lessons changed how I thought about money and eventually led me to become a licensed insurance agent.
During the same period, I deepened my friendship with Brian Bogaert, who had been a friend and financial coach for many years. Our conversations developed into a business partnership. Today, Brian and I are building the Financial Wealth pillar of Human Value Exchange together.
Then there was Caroline Dabu.
I had admired Caroline when she was a senior executive at BMO and I supported the organization during my Microsoft career. After she had left BMO and I had left Microsoft, we found an opportunity to collaborate.
Caroline shared her thinking about wealth, purpose and human flourishing. Around the same time, Brian introduced me to Sahil Bloom’s book The 5 Types of Wealth.
I was reading the book while having these conversations with Caroline. The language was different, but the ideas connected closely with each other and with the changes I had been making in my own life.
That was when the larger pattern came into focus.
The framework I had already lived
Over several years, I had been working through different dimensions of my life without seeing them as one connected system.
I had rebuilt my physical health with help from Wolfgang, Manny and Alan.
Through meditation, journaling and my work with Mama Laurie, I had begun developing mental wealth.
Jenna, my children, Iron Council and the other relationships around me had shown me the importance of social wealth.
Karan, Brian and Caroline helped develop my understanding of financial wealth.
Time was the piece I had not yet named. It is the resource through which all the others are experienced and developed.
Looking back, I realized I had not simply discovered the Five Types of Wealth. I had been living my way through them:
Time Wealth
Social Wealth
Mental Wealth
Physical Wealth
Financial Wealth
Each had given me more freedom in a different part of my life. Together, they offered a practical way to move from self-improvement toward self-mastery.
That five-year journey became Human Value Exchange.
Why we are launching Human Value Exchange
Human Value Exchange grew from a question I have been trying to answer since September 2021:
How do people become more free without neglecting the parts of life that make freedom meaningful?
Money is part of the answer. Human Value Exchange is a business, and it must be financially successful if it is going to serve people, support coaches and build programs that last. Financial Wealth belongs on the scoreboard.
It is one of five forms of wealth.
Human Value Exchange will offer frameworks, programs, coaching, content, community and technology to help people understand themselves, put what they learn into practice and work toward self-mastery.
The aim is practical: help people become freer with their time, healthier in their bodies, clearer in their minds, stronger in their relationships and more capable financially.
For much of human history, people often imagined enlightenment as a solitary pursuit. The seeker left ordinary life for a monastery, temple or ashram.
There is wisdom in that path. My own life has shown me another one.
My greatest lessons came through marriage, fatherhood, teachers, coaches, friends, brothers and business partners. They came while building a family, pursuing a career, recovering from failure and learning how to serve others.
This is the householder path. It asks us to practise self-mastery within life rather than apart from it.
Our time calls for people who can bring inner work back into their homes, relationships, businesses and communities. It calls for a better balance between the masculine and feminine, between individual sovereignty and our responsibility to one another.
Maybe the next step in human flourishing will come from people helping one another grow inside the world we already share.
That is what we are building with Human Value Exchange.
A place where people can begin their own self-mastery journey with help from teachers, coaches, practical frameworks and one another. A business built to create real value, earn revenue honestly and use that success to help more people.
Five years ago, I thought I needed to fix myself.
The people around me taught me that none of us becomes who we are meant to become alone.
Welcome to the Human Value Exchange.
Know Thyself. Be Thyself. Master Thyself.
To your freedom,
Hans Westphal
